Garlock to exhibit at Hunter Valley Mining

Garlock will display some of its fluid- sealing technologies on Stand 104 during the 2008 Hunter Valley Mining Expo at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre from September 22-24.
In business for more than 120 years, Garlock has a history of providing sealing solutions and water savings.
Among the products Garlock will feature will be:
· A HydraJust gland seal, which installs in place of a traditional gland packing or mechanical seal. Using as little as 12 litres an hour, the HydraJust can reduce reliance on water flush in pump stuffing boxes by millions of litres of water a year for just one pump. HydraJust also eliminates product dilution, another cost -reduction incentive in a wide range of plants
· A GPA slurry seal, which has a rubber coated cone spring to protect seal components from harsh abrasive slurry applications while providing improved service life compared to traditional gland packing. The seal can operate in virtually all known slurry pumping applications and can be arranged to operate with a grease lubrication system eliminating the need for water flush
· A split bearing isolator (Guardian) to provide bearing protection beyond commonly used lipseals, achieving longer service life for bearing cartridges. The split isolator does not wear the shaft or itself, meaning longer equipment operational life. It can be installed insitu on large rotating equipment, reducing downtime and turnaround.
Garlock also offers products and services to help sites reduce reliance on water. Its water flow monitoring program using a Controlotron 1010 flowmeter identifies the existing water usage for each stuffing box (something which is usually not known) and along with new applied product technologies shows the amount of water being saved for each application.
The combination of new sealing technologies that reduce or eliminate waste to the environment and monitoring of water usage provides every plant with maintenance improvement and cost reductions.
Garlock’s products also provide containment of hazardous fluids and materials that would otherwise damage the environment. Many of these products provide levels of emission containment, or reduction of water usage previously not thought possible.

Multi-Swell Gasket Creates Own Load, Dramatically Increasing Reliability

Palmyra, New York June 9, 2006– Garlock Sealing Technologies, a leader in fluid sealing technology for more than 100 years, has launched Multi-Swell, a proprietary new gasketing material which creates its own load when it comes into contact with oil or water, virtually eliminating the most common cause of gasket failure (low loads). This revolutionary new material performs equally well in oil or water, does not degrade in contact with oils, and adapts easily to all types of flange design, making Multi-Swell an ideal gasket for a broad range of applications –– all at a cost comparable to conventional gasket materials.

“It’s been documented that more than 70% of all gasket failures are due to lack of load,” said Tim Hurley, Garlock product manager. “Multi-Swell generates and maintains its own load. It works well even in combination with flanges in poor condition or flanges designed for soft, low performance gaskets.”

Twice as soft as conventional gaskets, Multi-Swell is easy to cut and readily conformable even to irregular flanges, ensuring tight seals with lower loads.

Multi-Swell features extremely high crush strength and can be safely installed in applications that would typically crush elastomeric gaskets. In applications such as transmissions and air conditioning systems where vibration often causes bolt load loss or where load loss occurs because of bolt relaxation, Multi-Swell counters that loss to prevent leakage and weeping. Because it performs well under low load conditions, Multi-Swell can be used with confidence even with plastic or cast iron flanges.

Using Multi-Swell actually reduces the expenses associated with vegetable fiber and cork gaskets. Cork and vegetable fiber gaskets’ capillary leak paths require the use of absorbent oil pads, create oil loss and safety issues, and sometimes necessitate expensive water treatment when leakage occurs. The use of Multi-Swell eliminates these associated costs.
Its versatility makes Multi-Swell ideal for applications such as: compressors, pumps, gear boxes, transformers, fuel pumps and cast water flanges.

Multi-Swell can be purchased through an authorized Garlock distributor or visit www.garlock.com and go to “Representative Locator” to contact a local Garlock representative. Pricing is available on request.

Garlock Introduces Revolutionary New Sealing Technology

Palmyra, New York – Garlock Sealing Technologies, a leader in fluid sealing technology for more than 100 years, has developed a completely new sealing solution –the leak-free, no-dilution HYDRA-JUST™ Sealing System. This patent-pending system replaces mechanical seals in virtually any industrial pumping application; it’s especially suited to hostile, abrasive environments and eliminates the risk of catastrophic failure.

“Success in this business is all about solving problems, and Garlock has created a solution that’s better than packing or mechanical seals,” says Michael Faulkner, Senior Product Manager for Garlock. “Early response has been fantastic: we’ve delivered a truly leak-free rotary seal with unmatched abrasion and chemical resistance – and incredible water efficiency.”

HYDRA-JUST is more robust than mechanical seals, and it handles system upsets with ease. It also gives customers an indication when it starts to fail – so customers can keep the system going until it’s convenient for them to change the seal. This means they can maximize their uptime, and schedule maintenance around their production needs, rather than re-scheduling production around sealing failures.

Since the technology is brand new, Garlock is holding seminars to help customers understand the science behind the product – and to point out its extraordinary benefits over mechanical seals.

These benefits include:

No risk of catastrophic failure

Outage-to-outage service in most industrial pumping applications

Optimal operation in hostile environments and abrasive conditions (including high-pressure/low-flow conditions)

Significantly reduced water consumption with cool, dry operation and no dilution

Easy installation and operation –no special equipment required to use or install

Fast installation – less than an hour (compared to at least 2 ½ to 3 hours for a mechanical seal)

No start-up adjustments

Lower prices than mechanical seals

Customers can purchase the new HYDRA-JUST seals through an authorized Garlock distributor or visit www.garlock.com and go to “Representative Locator” to contact a local Garlock representative.

The First Serviceable in Place Seal

Garlock Klozure® is proud to announce the release of the new XPS™ cartridge mechanical seal, the first truly Serviceable in Place mechanical seal in the industry.

Garlock Klozure’s new XPS seal is the industry’s first serviceable in place mechanical seal. Unlike traditional mechanical seals that house a single set of sealing faces, the XPS houses a series of sealing elements with some deployed and others held in reserve for future use. New elements can be deployed in a mater of seconds when a problem arises to allow users to continue their operation with minimal interruption. This represents a significant value for the user by not having to stop critical or expensive processes to perform a seal repair.

In addition to being serviceable in place, the XPS is one of the few mechanical seals in the world capable of running dry. The XPS sealing elements are capable of running totally dry for extended periods of time offering breakthrough industry protection during upset conditions! No more worrying if your traditional seal will be damaged due to a valve being shut or a tank empty - the XPS can handle it.

With the rebuild kit available on any XPS, the seal can also be fully reconditioned on site in under an hour at a fraction of the cost of conventional mechanical seals. With the XPS there is no need to send the seal back to a repair facility to get faces re-lapped or parts rebuilt.

The XPS is stocked for most ANSI pump sizes (Goulds, Flowserve, Peerless, Summit, Griswold, AKAY etc). Other applications are available with short lead-times.
